Fincantieri helped the Italian Navy achieve a first by lifting one of its submarines out of the water onto a semi-submersible platform ahead of maintenance.

The operation involving the Italian Navy’s Todaro-class Type 212 submarine Scire was carried out last week using Fincantieri’s Fjord platform in the Gulf of La Spezia, between the islands of Palmaria and Tino.

An Italian Navy press statement described beaching the submarine on the platform as “a technical operation of historic significance” and “a highly complex manoeuvre, which marks a milestone for the submarine component and the entire armed forces.”

Lifting the 57-metre-long, 1,500+ton submarine out of the water required synchronisation, precise positioning and engineering and logistics expertise.

A Fincantieri statement on its social media channels read: “Hauling on the Fjord platform required an effective collaboration between us and the Marina, deploying engineering and operational expertise that reflects the solidity of our historic synergy.

“This transaction shows how innovation, experience and industrial capacity can converge to successfully face the technical challenges of the sector, bringing new goals and horizons on board.”

And the commander of the Scirè, Lieutenant Commander Andrea Vito Palombella, commented: “There’s enthusiasm, pride, and even a tangible emotion. It wasn’t just a matter of completing a complex manoeuvre, but of doing it for the first time in real operational conditions and in full synergy with top-level partners.”
