The German Navy is gearing up to lead Northern Coasts 2025, a multinational NATO exercise in the Baltic Sea set to involve 14 nations and more than 40 ships.

Around 2,700 personnel will be involved in this year’s iteration of Northern Coasts (NOCO), an annual exercise that was first launched by the German Navy in 2007.

Forming part of the larger Quadriga 2025 exercise series, NOCO 25 will run from September 1-12. The initiative will model realistic threat scenarios on land, sea and in the air.

In addition to the host nation, the other Baltic Sea states — Denmark, Estonia, Finland. Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden — will all be represented. Joining them will be assets from Belgium, Canada, France the Netherlands, the U.K. and the USA.

As per a Bundeswehr press statement: “Multinational naval forces under German leadership will exercise in the Baltic Sea to further develop national and alliance defence capabilities.”

It added: “The focus is on the tactical planning and execution of maritime operations in coastal areas. The exercise also trains the interaction of various armed forces, including the application of modern technologies in a maritime environment.”
