A new attack helicopter set to be used by the Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROKMC) has been undergoing weapons tests.
As per a recent statement from the country’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the Marine Corps Landing Attack Helicopter (MAH) has proved its capabilities in a series of day and night tests of its machine guns and rockets.
The MAH is a variant of the Republic of Korea Army’s amphibious mobility helicopter (MUH) Marineon, itself based on the Surion platform, and featuring next-generation combat equipment and weapon systems.
An MAH prototype took to the skies for the first time at the end of last year; further testing of its guided rockets and air-to-ground missiles are scheduled for later this year, with the development programme scheduled to be completed halfway through 2026.
The DAPA statement said the envisioned role was providing support for the Marine Corps’ MUH amphibious assault helicopters during assaults, lending extra firepower on combat missions.
It noted: “The success of the firing tests is evaluated as a very important milestone in securing the foundation for the Marine Corps to operate its own airpower.”
Army Brigadier General Go Hyung-seok, DAPA Helicopter Project Director, commented: “The successful day and night live-fire tests have proven the core performance of the amphibious assault helicopter for actual deployment.”
