Defence prime Lockheed Martin has announced it intends to acquire undersea and anti-submarine warfare specialists Ultra Maritime in a deal valued at $3.45 billion.

Ultra Maritime, part of the Advent Group portfolio since 2022, specialises in acoustics, sonar and radar technologies. It makes anti-submarine warfare (ASW) equipment including the Multistatic Active Receive Sonobuoy (MSARS) and decoys such as the Sea Deceptor Acoustic Device Countermeasures (ADC) systems.

As per a Lockheed Martin press statement: “The company develops and delivers mission-critical systems including sonar technologies, sonobuoys, torpedo defense systems, radar solutions, and autonomous maritime sensing platforms.”

President of Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems Stephanie Hill commented: “By joining forces with Ultra Maritime, we’re accelerating our commitment to deliver the most advanced undersea and anti-submarine warfare capabilities to our U.S. and allied partners across the globe.”

And President & CEO at Ultra Maritime Carlo Zaffanella added: “Advent’s partnership and investment have been transformative for our business. Since 2022, we have developed and delivered an independent sonobuoy capability, redesigned our manufacturing facilities, and introduced groundbreaking modular sonar and autonomous acoustic sensing systems for our customers.

“At the same time, we have strengthened our position as a leader in torpedo technologies, towed and hull mounted sonars, radar solutions and torpedo countermeasures.”

Ultra Maritime recently conducted Royal Navy Atlantic Bastion trials of its MSARS technology in the waters off Scotland.

In May it announced it will be supplying the Royal Australian Navy’s surface fleet with its Sea Deceptor ADC torpedo countermeasures system.

It won a new sonobuoy contract from the U.S. Navy in April and last year scooped a €125 million deal for LFAPS sonar systems for the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) and the Belgian Navy’s new ASW frigates.
