A British P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) has flown a mission over the North Pole for the first time as part of Midnight Warrior, a two-week multinational training exercise.
The Boeing-built MPA operated by the Royal Air Force made the flight from Evenes Air Base in Norway during the course of running its first Poseidon Qualified Weapons Instructor Course (QWIC).
The QWIC, conducted by the RAF’s 42 Squadron, brought together RAF personnel and allied aircrews from Norway, Germany, and The Netherlands.
As per an RAF statement the course involved demanding operational sorties and tactical assessments: “This joint training environment provided an invaluable opportunity to sharpen skills and integrate with NATO partners.
Operating in extreme cold, Poseidon crews faced challenging navigation and environmental conditions, pushing the aircraft and aircrew to new limits. The flight to the North Pole showcased the Poseidon’s ability to operate effectively in the High North, extending the RAF’s maritime patrol reach.”
It added: “Working closely with three NATO warships and a NATO submarine off Bergen, the exercise reinforced the vital role of the Poseidon in maritime security and anti-submarine warfare.”
Routes flown on the sorties covered the strategically important “Bear Gap,”a maritime corridor linking the Barents and Norwegian seas. The flights demonstrated the RAF’s capability to maintain situational awareness and project power in extreme, continuous-daylight Arctic conditions.
The RAF statement noted: “The strong partnership with the Royal Norwegian Air Force continues to maximise Poseidon’s lethality and operational effect. Future exercises will build on this foundation, further enhancing the RAF ability to operate seamlessly alongside NATO allies in demanding environments.”
The P-8A Poseidon, built by Boeing, is an MPA developed from its 737 commercial airliner platform. It is designed to hunt submarines, track surface ships, and conduct search and rescue (SAR) missions.
It can deploy sonobuoys into the water to listen for and track enemy subs and carries high-tech radar and advanced cameras and sensors to gather high-definition video, photos, and electronic data.
The MPA is equipped with lightweight torpedoes to launch against submarines and it can also carry anti-ship missiles, such as Boeing’s Harpoon, and four pylons mounted under the wings.
It can also drop life rafts and survival equipment to people stranded at sea and coordinate rescue efforts.
