The Brazilian Navy has now officially taken delivery of its new domestically built first-in-class stealth frigate Tamandaré.
Launched in August 2024, Tamandaré is the first of four frigates being built for the navy by TKMS in a shipyard in Itajaí, on the coast of Santa Catarina. The 107-metre multipurpose warship displaces about 3,500 tons, has a range of around 5,500 nautical miles, and is capable of cruising at more than 25 knots.
She has a 12-cell vertical launch system (VLS) for SeaCeptor surface-to-air missiles and will also carry eight Mansup anti-ship missiles and Mk54 torpedoes.
The frigates also feature a flight deck and hangar capable of accommodating either a S-70B Seahawk or Airbus H225M helicopter. The warships may also embark a Boeing ScanEagle uncrewed aerial system (UAS).
As per a Brazilian Navy press statement, the warship’s delivery has been sealed with the signing of an agreement which rubber-stamps completion of construction, final outfitting, and sea trials.
Under the terms of the deal Tamandaré will now undergo a one-year trial period, at the end of which a Term of Acceptance and Final Receipt (TERD) will be signed.
The second warship, Jerônimo de Albuquerque, was launched in August last year. The two other frigates in the programme — Cunha Moreira, and Matriz e Barros — are currently also under construction at the shipyard. The launch of Cunha Moreira is anticipated in November 2027, and delivery of all three ships is scheduled for 2029.
