Saab has won a £670 million contract from TKMS to install radars and combat management systems on the German Navy’s new MEKO frigates.
The Swedish firm revealed it has signed a deal worth about SEK 8.7 billion to deliver, install and integrate combat systems, composite structures and sensors onto Germany’s first four MEKO A-200 DEU warships.
It said the systems — including its 9LV Fire Control System and Combat Management System, long-range and multi-mission Sea Giraffe radars, and passive sensors — will be delivered between 2029 and 2032.
The deal also includes a potential extension clause should the German Government decide to exercise its option for up to an additional four extra warships in the same class.
Saab CEO and President Micael Johansson said: “It is with great pride that we continue to build on our long and strong relationship and commitment to Germany and the Bundeswehr, while together with TKMS strengthening the German Navy.
“These deliveries will significantly enhance the Navy’s anti-air-, anti-submarine- and anti-surface warfare capabilities.”
Recently the budget committee of the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament, approved €6.3 billion funding for the first four MEKO frigates. It may seek to procure another four at an additional cost of €5.3 billion.
Shipbuilder TKMS has pledged the first frigate will be delivered to the German Navy as early as 2029.
Last month Germany announced it was axing its F126 frigate programme, blaming rising costs and project delays.
