Saronic Technologies has targeted 2028 as the opening date for its new Port Alpha shipyard set to be built in Brownsville, Texas.
The firm last week revealed the location of its $3 billion next-generation manufacturing facility, which it claims will create up to 10,000 jobs and generate $264.5 billion in increased business state-wide.
Construction work on Port Alpha, dubbed “one of the largest economic development projects in modern Texas history,” will begin before the end of the year.
A Saronic press statement said the firm’s intention was “to establish one of the most advanced shipyards in the world, built for software-defined shipbuilding and autonomous maritime systems.”
The 835-acre site has scope for expansion to nearly 4,400 acres, and the initial facility will be capable of producing vessels of up to 850ft. Future growth could enable ship sizes in excess of 1,200 ft.
Co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas commented: “Built from the ground up to deliver ships at a speed and scale not seen since World War II, this investment is about more than constructing a shipyard.
“It is about rebuilding the industrial capacity, workforce, and manufacturing advantage required to ensure American maritime leadership for decades to come.”
Saronic’s uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) range from the six-foot Spyglass to the 180ft Marauder; the latter has just begun sea trials.
Its Corsair platform has recently been used by the U.S. Navy operationally for both one-way strike and search-and-rescue missions.
