Russia has launched its newest nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, Knyaz Pozharskiy, with a ceremony attended by President Vladimir Putin.
The premier visited Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk, near Arkhanglesk on Russia’s Arctic coastline, last week to perform the flag-raising ceremony for the new Russian Navy vessel.
Knyaz Pozharskiy, which translates as Prince Pozharsky, is the nation’s fifth Borei-A class submarine. The 170-metre boats have a crew of 107 sailors and are thought to be capable of 29 knots submerged.
They are equipped with RSM-56 Bulava nuclear missiles with multiple warheads and an estimated maximum range in excess of 6,000 miles. They also carry torpedoes and can be equipped with torpedo-tube-launched RPK-2 Viyuga anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles.
As per a Kremlin press statement, six more nuclear submarines are scheduled to be built at the same shipyard by 2030.
