L3Harris will be providing the ship management system for Poland’s new Miecznik-class frigates after it signed a contract with state-owned shipyard PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.
L3Harris’ Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) is a distributed, real-time digital control system providing monitoring and automation of onboard machinery. It provides integrated control for various on-board systems including propulsion, and electrical, auxiliary, and battle damage management systems.
Translating as Swordfish, Poland’s new Miecznik-class warships are based on the Arrowhead 140 ship design by Babcock International, which also forms the base platform for the Royal Navy’s new Type 31 frigates.
The programme to build the three vessels represents the largest contract in Polish shipbuilding history. All three frigates — ORP Wicher, ORP Burza, and ORP Huragan — are under construction at the Gdynia shipyard, with the first, ORP Wicher, scheduled to be launched later this year and operational by 2029.
L3Harris said its IPMS incorporates functionalities and capabilities developed across years of working with partners including the Royal Navy, the Royal Netherlands Navy, the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy.
Its President of Maritime, Space & Mission Systems Nino DiCosmo commented: “Miecznik-class frigates, powered by L3Harris’ IPMS, represent the future of maritime defence, providing Poland with superior combat power and a strategic edge in regional waters.
“Our next-generation solution strengthens Poland’s defence industrial capabilities while enabling the fleet to extend operational range and endurance.”
