Royal Danish Navy (RDN) frigates will be equipped with Rheinmetall’s Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) decoys to protect them from missile threats.
The German defence prime this week announced it had secured a “two-digit million Euro” deal with Denmark’s Ministry of Defence.
Starting towards the end of 2027, the MASS decoy systems, which help guard against missile and laser attacks, will be fitted to both the RDN’s Absalon and Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates.
Extra MASS systems will also be supplied to the RDN’s Weapons School, and the deal also includes provision of an unspecified number of Omnitrap-ER decoys, as well as a replenishment agreement stretching up to 2048.
The firm said the latest order meant 400 MASS systems were now being used by 18 nations globally; last month it announced Kuwaiti Naval Forces’ eight new Al Dorra-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) would carry MASS decoys.
Rheinmetall’s Business Unit Protection Systems CEO Hauke H. Bindzus said: “The past few months have demonstrated the outstanding role played by the Danish Navy in NATO’s maritime defence in the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and also in the Arctic.
“Against this backdrop, we are particularly grateful that we have now also been able to convince the Danish Navy of the superiority of our MASS system as a soft-kill protection system for its frigates.”
MASS provides multispectral decoys via a single system by covering all relevant wavelength ranges, including radar, ultraviolet, electrooptical sensors, lasers and infrared. Its latest Omnitrap-ER decoy rounds feature an extended range and an improved trajectory for more precise deployment against infrared-guided threats.
