Nordic defence prime Kongsberg has just launched a new sonar capability, Aegir, which it says offers enhanced underwater situational awareness.
The Aegir SSA (Subsea Situational Awareness) system is a family of complementary sonar systems designed to improve maritime seabed security.
Unveiled this week at ONS 2026, a global energy forum hosted in Stavanger, Norway, Aegir offers a mix-and-match combination of scalable options taking in sonobuoys, mobile sensors on uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), fixed installations and “larger maritime platforms.”
It also includes a mission-configurable AI-powered virtual sonar operator, removing the need for continuous human monitoring.
Before launch, Kongsberg collaborated with Fugro to deploy Aegir SSA on a Seawatch buoy in Oslofjord. At ONS 2026, visitors could see a real-time feed demonstrating monitoring of critical underwater infrastructure (CUI).
The firm stated: “As maritime infrastructure becomes increasingly important to energy security, transportation, offshore operations, and national resilience, operators require better visibility below the waterline.
“Ports, harbours and coastal environments present unique challenges. High traffic density, shallow waters, drifting objects and potential unauthorized activity create risks that often remain hidden from conventional monitoring systems.”
The firm’s VP Subsea Awareness Helge Andre Sundt added: “The underwater domain has become a critical operational environment for both commercial and government operators.
“With Aegir SSA, we are bringing Kongsberg sonar expertise into a purpose-built product family designed to enhance security, safety and operational awareness in demanding maritime environments.”
