Brazil signalled its intention to acquire four more Tamandaré-class frigates as the first-in-class vessel was welcomed into its Navy’s fleet.

At a ceremony marking the official commissioning into service of the Tamadaré, built domestically at the TKMS shipyard in Itajaí, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed paving the way for four more ships.

Tamandaré represents the first vessel of the Tamandaré Class Frigates Program (PFCT), a four-frigate project. The MoU signed at her commissioning between the German shipbuilder, the Ministry of Defense of Brazil and Embraer, signals an intent to build a second batch of four similar warships.

The vessels are based on TKMS’s MEKO A-100 platform. The three other frigates in the first phase of the PFCT are scheduled to be delivered to the Brazilian Navy by 2029.

CEO of TKMS Oliver Burkhard commented: “We have been partners of the Brazilian Navy since the 1980s, when we jointly developed the successful Tupi-class submarines. The commissioning of the Tamandaré frigate now represents a new milestone in this journey, and TKMS stands ready to continue it with a second batch of four additional ships.

“The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in this regard is a strong sign of the deep trust between us and Brazil. The project demonstrates how structured international cooperation can enhance strategic capabilities while strengthening the local industrial base.”

CEO of TKMS Brazil Paulo Alvarenga added: “The Tamandaré Class Frigates Program is a concrete example of technology transfer, strengthening of the defence industrial base, and value creation for the country. We are proud to contribute to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Brazilian Navy.”
