The latest iteration of biennial naval exercise Pacific Griffin helped the U.S. Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy hone their warfighting skills together.
The 2025 version of Pacific Griffin stretched across a dozen days earlier this month and included both surface fleet and air assets engaging in multiple drills in a designated training area in the waters off the coast of Guam.
RSN ships taking part included its Formidable-class frigate RSS Supreme — including her embarked S-70B Seahawk naval helicopter — and the Independence-class littoral mission vessel RSS Sovereignty.
In addition two Fokker-50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft and six F-16 fighter aircraft from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) also participated.
USN assets included Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS William P. Lawrence, oiler USNS Charles Drew and a P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
Simulated missions on this year’s exercise, which ran from June 7-18, included anti-submarine warfare (ASW) manoeuvres, surface encounters, air-defence drills and live missile and gunnery firings. Divers from both navies were also involved in Ex PG25, participating in explosive ordnance disposal and counter-terrorism operations.
RSN’s Commander First Flotilla Colonel Ng Kok Yeng Daniel commented: “It is a valuable opportunity for both navies to enhance our mutual cooperation and understanding.”
USN’s Deputy Commander Task Group, Commodore Destroyer Squadron 7, Capt. John Baggett added: “We have a firm commitment to our partners in this region and a partnership with Singapore that spans nearly six decades.
“Pacific Griffin is one of many technologically robust training opportunities we participate in throughout the year that allows us to build dynamic competencies as an integrated maritime force.”
