The timing of a recent solar storm proved serendipitous for sailors aboard the Royal Australian Navy frigate HMAS Warramunga as she sailed through the Bass Strait.

Crewmembers aboard the Anzac-class frigate were treated to an unrivalled light show earlier this month as they transited between the Indian and Pacific oceans.

Their southerly position not far from the northern shore of Tasmania and the lack of light pollution meant they were ideally positioned to enjoy a spectacular Aurora Australis display.

As per a Defence Australia statement, lots of sailors aboard the frigate grabbed the chance to see the Southern Lights for themselves, even if they weren’t on watch duties.
