Fincantieri subsidiary WASS Submarine Systems has won a contract worth more than €200 million to supply torpedoes to Indian Navy submarines.

Under the terms of the newly-struck the Indian fleet’s six Scorpène-class submarines will be kitted out with Black Shark Advanced (BSA) heavyweight torpedoes. A rolling three-year delivery schedule will see the first of 48 weapons supplied in 2028, as per a recent Fincantieri press statement.

CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri Pierroberto Folgiero commented: “This agreement marks a key strategic step for Fincantieri in India, a market of central importance in our long-term international growth strategy and one of the most dynamic naval hubs globally.

“Strengthening our presence in India means building enduring industrial and institutional partnerships in a region that plays an increasingly pivotal role in global maritime security.”

The BSA torpedoes are already used by the Italian Navy, as well as six other countries: Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Malaysia, Portugal and Singapore.

The 6.3-metre torpedoes have a firing range of about 27 nautical miles (50km) and carry a 350kg high explosive warhead; they travel at around 50 knots. Production work on the new weapons will be centred on the WASS facility in Livorno, Italy.
