Marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity has launched its new NeedleFish uncrewed surface vessel (USV) which is being used for patrols by the Kuwait Coast Guard (KCG).

As per a recent Ocean Infinity press statement, the coast guard, part of the Kuwait Police, will be operating four of the dual-hull drone boats to provide uncrewed patrol, surveillance, and mapping and surveying capabilities.

Each USV is 14 metres long, six metres wide, and has two engines making it capable of about 35 knots. The NeedleFish USVs will work as a key component of SRT Marine Systems’ new real-time maritime surveillance system.

NeedleFish carries an array of sensor systems including cameras, radars and RF sensors. Last week one of the KCG fleet of USVs completed a live open-water demonstration exercise laid on for Kuwait Minister of Defence Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah, and KCG Commander Commodore Sheikh Mubarak Ali Al Sabah.

Oliver Plunkett, CEO of Ocean Infinity, said: “We are excited to see our NeedleFish USV rollout continue this week.

“This programme is another significant milestone for Ocean Infinity as we employ our deep operational experience and proven technology to support clients in new and more complex markets at a time when these capabilities are more relevant than ever.”

Kuwait awarded SRT a $213 million contract to deliver a national integrated maritime surveillance system for its 4,200 square miles of territorial waters in October last year.

At the time its chief executive Simon Tucker commented: “Winning this landmark contract is a huge honour and achievement for SRT…

“This system will undoubtedly be amongst the most sophisticated maritime surveillance systems in the world, incorporating several significant innovations along with full integration and digitisation of surveillance and command and control which will provide a powerful tool to enhance national security and maritime safety and environment protection and sustainability.”
