Royal Danish Navy vessels will be getting upgraded tactical data links after Denmark’s Materiel and Procurement Agency (FMI) signed a deal with Spanish technology firm Tecnobit.

The Spanish telecommunications and electrical engineering firm, part of Grupo Oesía, “will deliver technical solutions for tactical data links to the Danish Navy’s sailing units,” as per a recent FMI press statement.

As well as being installed on the larger RDN vessels, a separate training unit will be installed at the force’s Naval Tactical School. Work on installing the new systems is expected to commence before the end of the year.

The new comms network will replace two existing systems covering short- and long-range transmissions respectively; it is also fully compatible with a similar system used by the Danish Air Force.

Commander Steen Balslev, head of the FMI’s maritime division, commented: “Communication is crucial when the Navy operates in Danish and international waters. Therefore, it is with great satisfaction that we are signing a contract for new systems from Tecnobit.

“With the new systems, it is not only communication at sea that will be modernized and boosted, it is also interoperability between the services and in international contexts that will benefit from these systems.”
