The keel of future warship Menéndez de Avilés, the third F110-class frigate destined for the Spanish Navy, has been laid at Navantia’s shipyard in Ferrol, northern Spain.
The firm said the milestone, marked with a ceremony at its yard near A Coruna, had been reached seven months ahead of schedule.
As per Navantia press statement, Monday’s keel-laying ceremony for the future Menéndez de Avilés was presided over by Navantia’s President Ricardo Domínguez and Director General of Armament and Material (DIGAM), Admiral Aniceto Rosique.
All four ships in the class are now under construction; the final ship Luis de Córdova is in the preliminary stages of construction, and the main structure of the second, Roger de Lauria, was recently completed with the assembly of her bow section.
The first-in-class warship Bonifaz was launched at the Ferrol yard in September 2025. She is alongside there undergoing final outfitting of combat systems, including her SPY-7 radar, ahead of sea trials. She is scheduled to be delivered to the Armada during 2028.
Navantia stated: “These multi-purpose escort vessels possess anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, and anti-surface warfare capabilities and are also prepared for hybrid warfare and emerging threats. This represents a significant leap forward in the Navy’s operational capabilities.”
