RNZN Fleet Damage Control Designate, Royal New Zealand Navy

Lieutenant Commander Simon Shirer is the RNZN Fleet Damage Control Officer designate, anticipated to be taking the role April 2025. LT CDR Shirer joined the RNZN in 2008 as a Marine Technician and commissioned in 2012. Following successful charge qualification LT CDR Shirer has been the Marine Engineering Officer of HMNZS Matataua (Dive and Hydrography shore unit), HMNZS Otago (OPV) and HMNZS Te Mana (ANZAC FFH).


Lieutenant Commander Shirer has a keen interest in training and developing teams from his time at sea and is looking forward to beginning a new challenge as the Fleet Damage Control Officer.


Lieutenant Commander Shirer is married to Monica, they have two young children and enjoy typical New Zealand pastimes in the outdoors and on the water. LT CDR Shirer speaks just enough Colombian spanish to converse with his parents in law and know when his son is planning mischief.
