Mikko Saarinen
I am 59 years old retired Naval Officer who graduated from the Naval Academy in 1989.
First 10 years in the Finnish Navy I worked on different classes of naval combat ships.
After graduated from the General Staff Officer Course in 1999 I worked in different positions in the Finnish Navy such as a deputy commander in the 7th Missile Squadron, teacher (Naval Tactics) and Naval Academy as the head of the Higher Education Department. In 2007, I transferred to the Navy Command M5 to be responsible for the strategic planning.
In the years 2009-2012 I was the Commander of the 7th Missile Squadron. After Commander post I started as a director of the Naval Combat Center. In the same time, I was also seconded to Kiel, Germany, to the NATO Center of Excellence Confined and Shallow waters.
After 20-year service in the Finnish Navy I transferred to the Plans and Policy Department (J5) of the Defence Command Finland. My last post was a Liaison Officer at US EUCOM (United States European Command) in Stuttgart, Germany.
After retirement 2019, I have worked through my own company (MS-Consult) as a consultant for the Defense Forces in various projects. Currently, the most important project is to support the National Defense University in planning international exercises and teaching NATO operational planning.
My family includes my wife and two children in their thirties (a daughter and a son). Today I am also the proud grandfather of two grandchildren.
My language skills are Finnish, Swedish, English.
