Matt is a long serving Weapon Engineer in the Royal Navy with a wide and varied background in capability acquisition and management, operational engineering as well as programme leadership for Complex systems.  Starting his career as an Artificer Apprentice in 1987, he transferred to the Officer Corps in 1996 and served on Operations around the world in T22, T23, T42 and T45 platforms as well as a period as the Staff Weapons Engineering Officer (SWEO) to the Portsmouth Flotilla. More broadly he has worked in the Ministry of Defence as the sponsor for Maritime Complex Weapons as part of the MoD’s strategic Complex Weapons Portfolio, and has held numerous roles in DE&S. 

His most recent appointments have seen him lead the Maritime Anti-Air Weapon System (MAWS) Delivery Team, delivering the T45 Sea Viper System and the Navy’s Complex Maritime Radar programme.  This included the contract placement for the introduction of the Common Anti-Air Modular Missile (CAMM) and the ASTER Block 1 missile to the Type 45 which will deliver a significant upgrade to the Navy’s Anti Air and Ballistic Missile Defence capabilities.  His most recent role was as the Deputy Director for the Weapons Operating Centre (WOC) and the head of the Maritime Strike, International and Munitions (MSIM) Delivery Pillar, leading 320 staff responsible for providing weapons capability and support to all of the Front Line Commands.  He is now appointed as the Deputy Director Navy Acquisition for Equipment and Systems.

Matt is a Chartered Engineer with a BEng (First) in Electronic Engineering from Southampton University and a MSc in Military Equipment System Engineering (MESE) from Cranfield University.
