From Long Island NY, CAPT Barrientos graduated from the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in Mechanical Engineering and a commission from the naval ROTC in April 2000. He is a graduate of the navy nuclear power program and has a Master’s in Engineering Managment from Old Dominion University.

He has served on multiple platforms in his various sea tours. As Ordnance Officer on USS REUBEN JAMES (FFG 57), he deployed with the ABRAHAM LINCOLN strike group to the FIFTH FLEET area of operations. On USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) he deployed again to FIFTH FLEET serving as Reactor Mechanical Division Officer in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

As a department head he deployed on USS BOONE (FFG 28) to the SOUTHCOM area of operations in support of counter narcotics operations, and to the Gulf of Aden in support of counter-piracy operations with the Standing NATO Maritime Group. Returning to nuclear duty, he served as Chemistry and Radiological Controls Assistant on USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) during Operation Tomodachi.

He commissioned USS OMAHA (LCS 12) as Executive Officer and commanded USS JACKSON (LCS 6) completing first in class live-fire testing and integration of the surface-to surface mission module (SSMM) longbow hellfire missile for the INDEPENDENCE variant Littoral Combat Ship.

CAPT Barrientos returned to USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) serving as Reactor Officer, leading 520 Officers and Sailors in delivering power and propulsion to the flag ship of CARL VINSON Carrier Strike Group One. The strike group conducted the first operational deployment of the F-35C Lightning II to the western Pacific Ocean, including significant time in the South China Sea.

Ashore he served as Directed Energy Branch Head, JFCC for Space, USSTRATCOM at the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center in Colorado Springs, CO. He completed a Staff College curriculum at the Uruguayan Naval War College in Montevideo, Uruguay before returning to nuclear duty serving as Junior Board Member in the COMPACFLT Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board. Most recently, he was the CNO’s fellow to the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

He has earned multiple personal and unit/campaign awards including three Meritorious Service Medals, and multiple Navy Commendation Medals and Navy Service Medals. He is married to Dr. Ana Maria Zamora from Cali, Colombia.
