Darran Hunter-Hughes

Darran is a Principal Consultant at Frazer-Nash Consultancy, specialising in Submarines and

Safety with a focus on providing support to major design programmes both in the UK and

abroad.

A former submariner, Darran served in Trafalgar class submarines in a number of global

deployments, gaining a wide range of operational experience of both plant and platform

before completing appointments in the UK MOD’s Nuclear Propulsion Project Team as

technical lead for Control and Instrumentation and for Reactor Components. Darran Left the

Royal Navy in 2016, pursuing opportunities in the civil sector where he fulfilled both safety

and design roles in a programme to introduce an advanced plant design to the UK.

Joining Frazer-Nash in 2020, Darran has led our support to the SSN AUKUS programme,

designing and continuing to help develop the programme’s safety campaign, introducing

alternative ways of thinking about complex safety cases. Darran is a member of the Safety

Critical Systems Club and is a contributing author to international standards through the both

the BSI and IECs Complex Systems Safety working Group.
