Personal Profile

Colonel TAN SAY YONG enlisted into the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in 1999 and commissioned as a Naval Officer in 2001. Colonel Tan was awarded the SAF Merit Scholarship (Military) to study Economics at the United States Naval Academy and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Merit) in 2005. He is also a distinguished graduate of the United States Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and an alumnus of the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Colonel Tan’s early career in the RSN was spent on board the Anti-Submarine Patrol Vessels and Frigates where he held Navigation and Communications Officer appointments. Thereafter, he joined the RSAF’s Naval Helicopter Squadron as a pioneer Tactical Aircraft Coordination Officer (TACCO). Colonel Tan was thereafter appointed Head, Specialised Craft Group, First Flotilla. He has also commanded RSS Valiant, a Victory-class Missile Corvette, and subsequently commanded Eighth Flotilla.

Ashore, Colonel Tan has served in the Naval Warfare Group, Naval Plans Department and Naval Operations Department. He currently heads the RSN Shipbuilding Group.

Colonel Tan’s awards and decorations include the SAF Long Service and Good Conduct Awards (20 Years), and the Public Administration Medal (Bronze).

Colonel Tan is happily married to Corinne Rooke Bianca.
