Cdr Alex Goddard

FADS Deputy Programme Director, Royal Navy

Personal Profile

Alex joined the Royal Navy as an Artificer in 1991. Selected for training as a Marine Engineer (ME) he completed an apprenticeship at HMS Sultan before going on to serve in HM Ships Brazen, Beaver and Campbeltown. In 2007 Alex joined BRNC as a Senior Upper Yardman and once training was complete he joined HMS Ark Royal as a section officer. While in HMS Ark Royal he sat and passed his Marine Charge Qualification.

His first shore appointment as a Lt saw him take on the responsibility for delivering organic engineering support to the Fleet Diving Squadron (Now the Diving and Threat Exploitation Group) as the Squadron Engineer Officer. During his time there he oversaw the transformation of the engineering support ensuring the niche skills required to support operational diving were enhanced. After this he returned to sea as the Engineer Officer in HMS Scott where he ran a small but dedicated department keeping the ship at sea in all conditions. Once finished in HMS Scott it was back to HMS Sultan, this time as the course manager overseeing the delivery of ME officer career courses and from there to a role in the NCHQ Ships Division providing specialist ME policy support to the small ship community. Once promoted to Lt Cdr, Alex had the great good fortune to be selected for the role of Senior ME in HMS Queen Elizabeth. Responsible for running the largest ME department afloat in the RN, Alex was in the ship for its inaugural deployment to the USA, for the first land on of F-35 and also for the first planned docking period to be undertaken be a QEC aircraft carrier.

After a stint as a trials officer in MCTA, Alex joined the Develop Directorate and took on the role of MROS Programme Director, the programme which procured RFA Proteus, the RNs new Seabed Warfare platform. During this assignment he was selected for promotion to Commander and has latterly been part of the RNs Future Air Dominance System programme as the Deputy Programme Director. Alex lives in Hampshire with his wife, one remaining son, the other is at university, and a very lively Labrador. He is a volunteer Scout Leader in the local Scout Group and also plays saxophone in a local village wind band.
