Captain Niels Markussen

Personal Profile

Captain Niels Markussen graduated from the Royal Danish Naval Academy in 1990. He received his first command the same year, as commander of a patrol vessel operating in Danish waters and in the Baltic Sea.
Most of his career he has spent at sea and he has had a total of five periods as commanding officer, including two periods as division commander. He has commanded Fast Attack Crafts, Arctic Patrol Vessels, Arctic Patrol Frigates and advanced Air Defense Frigates. He has spent much of his career at sea in the Arctic, in the waters around Greenland, Iceland and the Faroy Islands.
His career also includes service as Executive Officer for the Danish Navy Special Forces (the Frogman Corps), Teacher in Operations at the Royal Danish Defense College, Chief of Staff at the Naval Academy and as Deputy Commander for the Executive Branch in the Danish Defence Command.

He attended the Junior Staff Course and the Principal Warfare Officers Course in 1993 – 1995, the General Staff Course at the Royal Danish Defense College in 2003 – 2004 and the Senior Officers Course at NATO Defense College in 2019.

The captain has participated in NATO operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan and other international and national out-of-area in the Middle East and Africa.
He took over the position as Director NATO Shipping Center (NSC) in February 2021. Since 2023 he have also been heading the newly established NATO Maritime Center for the Security of Critical Undersea Infrastructure (NMCSCUI)
The captain graduated with honor from both the Danish Staff College and NATO Defence College. He is Knight of the Order of Dannebrog.
The captain is divorced and father to two grown-up children.
