He joined the Italian Navy in 1995 and, after graduating from the Naval Academy in 1999, attended the Submarine School, where he completed his initial submarine training. He then began his operational career in the Italian Submarines Forces, serving as Navigator and Weapons Officer on board Italian submarines.
Captain Molaschi holds university degrees in Electronic Engineering and in Maritime and Naval Science, the latter obtained in 1999. His academic and professional military education was further enriched by attendance at the Anti-Submarine Warfare Specialization Course at the Naval Academy in Livorno in 2007, and at the Naval Command School in 2008, a prerequisite for command of naval units. In 2009, he also attended advanced courses at the Institute of Maritime and Military Studies in Venice.
In 2009, as a Lieutenant, he assumed his first command at sea, taking command of ITS Palmaria. In this role, he took part in several national and NATO operations and exercises, gaining significant experience in operational planning and multinational maritime cooperation. Returning to the Submarines Forces, from 2010 to 2012 he served on board ITS Gazzana as Executive Officer. He was subsequently appointed Commanding Officer of ITS Prini, a position he held from 2012 to 2016, leading the unit through an intensive period of operational, training and readiness activities.
After completing his command tour at sea, he served for one year as Head of the Personnel Department at the Command of the Italian Submarine Flotilla in Taranto (COMFLOTSOM Taranto), where he was responsible for personnel management and organizational matters within the submarine component.
From 2017 to 2021, Captain MOLASCHI was assigned to the Submarine and Underwater Dimension Department of the Italian Navy General Staff in Rome, serving in the Research and Development Office. In this capacity, he was involved in activities related to capability development, innovation, and the advancement of submarine-related programmes and projects. From September 2021 to November 2024, he served in Northwood, London (United Kingdom), as Branch Head of the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office of NATO Maritime Command (MARCOM)/COMSUBNATO. During this assignment, he was responsible for strengthening international cooperation in the field of submarine escape and rescue, fostering coordination among Allied and partner nations, and supporting NATO efforts in this highly specialized and strategically relevant field.
Upon his return to Italy, on 18 November 2024 he was appointed Head of the SMER Office within the Submarines and Underwater Dimension Department at the Italian Navy General Staff, where he currently oversees activities related to Submarine Escape and Rescue and contributes to the broader development of the underwater dimension.
Captain Andrea MOLASCHI is married to Fabiana, and they have three sons: Enea, David and Noah. He is passionate about tennis and actively practices the sport.
