Captain (Ret’d) Andrew Hertel

Captain Andy Hertel (ret.), Senior Director of Navy Programs at Saildrone, served for over 29 years in the US Navy as a Submarine Officer and Nuclear Engineer. His sea tours include Commanding Officer of the submarine USS Texas (SSN 775), Executive Officer on USS North Carolina (SSN 777), department head on USS Greeneville (SSN 772), and junior officer on USS Tennessee (SSBN 734). He also served as senior staff of Seventh Fleet based in Yokosuka, Japan, as well as in multiple fleet support and training assignments essential for the support of deployed forces. Andy holds a BS in Cell and Structural Biology from the University of Illinois and an MBA from Troy University. Andy also serves as Professor of the Practice in National Security at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke.
