Ultra Maritime Launches New Lightweight Sonar

Sea Spear, a new lightweight sonar capable of being deployed from both crewed and uncrewed vessels, has been launched by Ultra Maritime.

As per a press statement, the firm is planning a full operational demonstration for the system, which expands from a 21-inch diameter reel unit to create a wide-aperture array, later on this year.

The firm’s release noted: “As the maritime domain shifts, submarines become more stealthy and unmanned underwater vehicles grow in number, Sea Spear provides a solution for long endurance and long-range surveillance capability and threat monitoring.”

It claims Sea Spear “enhances submarine detection capabilities rapidly and inexpensively.”

Ultra Maritime has partnered Sea Spear to work in conjunction with Anduril’s Seabed Sentry network of wireless deep-sea sensors. It is launching its new capability this week at a conference in Maryland, USA.
