The Turkish Navy has successfully test-fired Roketsan’s Atmaca guided missile from one of its submarines for the first time.

Atmaca is a domestically developed long-range precision-strike, anti-ship cruise missile set to enter service with the Turkish Navy to gradually replace the country's existing inventory of Harpoon missiles.

Roketsan’s weapon has been in service with the Turkish Armed Forces since 2022; the naval version is thought to have an estimated range of up to 150 miles (250km). At present the missile is only used by Turkey, but Indonesia and Malaysia are both also in the process of acquiring the weapon.

The “encapsulated” Atmaca projectile, modified to be housed inside a container fired from a horizontal torpedo tube, was fired from the Turkish Navy’s TCG Preveze submarine. The successful test was announced last week at the regular Turkish Ministry of National Defence (MoND) press briefing.

Ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk announced: “The first actual firing of the “Encapsulated ATMACA Guided Missile” produced by Roketsan with domestic and national resources was successfully carried out from our TCG Preveze submarine in Mersin on March 12.”

The test was also announced on social media; the official Facebook account of the Turkish MoND stated: “The first verbal shot was carried out within the scope of the project developed for the "ATMACA Guided Bullet" produced by Roketsan with local and national capabilities to be used by our submarines.

“With the participation of President of Defence Industry Haluk Görgün, Commander of Naval Forces Oramiral Ercüment Tatlıo Genellu and General Manager of Rocketsan Murat ğlukinci, the shooting of ‘Capsule Launch Guided Bullet’ from TCG Preveze submarine was successfully carried out.

“We celebrate the heroes of our defence industry who power the strength of our Navy.”
