Danish defence firm Terma’s C-Guard decoy system will be fitted to the Colombian Navy’s new PES frigate.

The prime contractor for the PES frigate project Damen Naval has signed a contract with the Danish company for the supply of its C-Guard Decoy Launching System, which includes Anti-Aircraft Warfare (AAW) and Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) modules.

As per a Damen press statement, the system will protect the ship against a variety of disparate threats, significantly enhancing the new platform’s survivability.

Project Director at Damen Naval Jasper Oreel commented: “We are pleased to integrate Terma’s advanced C-Guard system into the PES frigate. Its proven performance and modular configuration are a strong match for the mission versatility of the SIGMA 10514 platform.”

And Terma Naval Sales Sales Director Martin Jentsch added: “We are proud of the relationship and trust received by Damen Naval and we welcome the opportunity to work even closer, not only with Damen Naval but also the Colombian Navy.”

He added: “With the selection of Terma’s C-Guard decoy system, this platform has opted for a future proof round agnostics and automatic countermeasure system, with more than 150 systems in operation.”

Dutch shipbuilding group Damen Naval agreed a deal with the Colombian Ministry of Defence to build the PES frigate for the Colombian Navy at the COTECMAR shipyard in Cartagena back in 2022. The ship is due to be delivered in 2030.

The PES vessel, the first to be built in Colombia, will be based on the design of Damen Naval’s SIGMA Multi-Mission Frigate 10514; variants of this ship are already in use in Indonesia and Mexico.

The 105-metre vessels have a maximum speed for more than 27 knots, a 5,000-nautical-mile range, and are equipped for both surface and anti-submarine warfare missions.
