U.K. defence firm SEA has bagged a contract to fit its weapon-agnostic triple trainable Torpedo Launcher System (TLS) to five new Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) frigates.

The TLS is a rapid-reaction, close-range system which can fire a variety of different torpedoes, including the U.K. Sting Ray, the U.S. Mk44, Mk46 and Mk54, the Italian A244S, the French MU90 and the Korean Blue Shark. It can also be configured for other types as required.

The newly struck deal will see five Maharaja Lela-class Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) equipped with the advanced lightweight torpedo launcher.

Head of TLS at SEA Chris Bennett commented: “We are thrilled to partner with Lumut Naval Shipyard to deliver our advanced triple configuration Torpedo Launcher System for the Royal Malaysian Navy.”

He added: “By enhancing Malaysia’s maritime defence capabilities and supporting the development of its domestic defence industry, we continue to strengthen our presence in the Asia-Pacific region and build strategic partnerships to meet the demands of modern navies.”

And LCS Project Director at Lumut Naval Shipyard Captain Rosnizam Che Puteh said: “The integration of SEA’s Torpedo Launcher System will significantly enhance the defensive and operational capabilities of the Maharaja Lela-class LCS.

“We look forward to working closely with SEA’s experienced team to ensure the successful delivery of this advanced system.”

In January the company, part of the Cohort group, revealed that it had also recently bagged a deal with an unnamed Latin American navy to fit the TLS to its fleet’s frigates.

Established for more than 60 years, SEA today has a workforce of about 450 people and has U.K. offices in Barnstaple, Beckington, and Bristol, as well as an overseas base in Quebec, Canada.
