Saab Launches New Autonomous Naval Control System
Swedish defence firm Saab has launched Autonomous Ocean Core (AOC), its new platform-agnostic control system for uncrewed assets.
As per the company's recent press statement, AOC has been designed to offer control of autonomous systems for surface and subsurface naval platforms in both military and civilian contexts. The open-architecture system provides baseline autonomy, including vessel control, to platforms on or below the ocean surface and allows operators to add additional capabilities.
AOC-enabled uncrewed vessels can operate on missions including electronic warfare, mine detection and clearance, and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR); the firm claims that its new system is ready to perform tasks “right out of the box.”
Mats Wicksell, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab’s Kockums Business Area, commented: “The development of naval unmanned and autonomous units is progressing, enhancing capabilities for maritime security operations.
“Autonomous Ocean Core can boost key operational strengths for the dull, dirty, dangerous and dear. This control system gives our customers a tactical edge, increasing availability and efficiency and becoming less dependent on active manpower.”
