Portuguese Navy submarine NRP Arpão has returned to its home port of Lisbon after 71 days at sea sailing in support of various multinational missions and exercises.

The Arpão took part in Operation Sea Guardian (OSG), NATO's standing maritime security operation seeking to enhance readiness and Situational Awareness across the Mediterranean Sea. Its exercises are designed to deter and counter terrorism, and build capacity and interoperability among NATO Allies and partners.

By the time it returned to Lisbon yesterday (Monday) the Arpão had been sailing for more than 1,200 hours, as per a Portuguese Navy press statement. As well as the Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM)-led OSG, the submarine also participated in NATO's Operation Noble Shield, a Ukraine-focused patrol exercise, and sailed as part of the E.U.'s Operation Irini.

It also carried out Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) activities with other NATO partners in Neptune Strike 24, an exercise led by Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO).

The sub's safe return to Lisbon was marked by a ceremony attended by the head of the Portuguese Navy Admiral Henrique Gouveia e Melo and other dignitaries.
