Portuguese Navy Divers Go Deep
Portuguese mine warfare specialists have reached new heights of achievement — by diving to ever-greater depths.
As per a recent Portuguese Navy press statement, its deep diving team from the Sapper Divers Detachment No. 3 have just achieved certification for descents down to 120m below the surface, a development it described as "an unprecedented capability of great operational value."
The 3rd Sapper Diver Detachment's twin areas of focus are deep-sea diving and mine countermeasures (MCM).
The Portuguese Navy stated: "The reinforcement of this capacity reflects the continuation of the forefront of knowledge in the technical area of deep diving and provides Portugal and NATO with a reinforced military capacity that increases security and the capacity to respond to military missions and support for civil protection at great depths."
