Built in 2003 and bought by the New Zealand government in 2018, the HMNZS Manawanui was used to conduct underwater surveillance. Unfortunately, six years after the government purchased the ship, it sank off the coast of Samoa this past Sunday. Despite losing the ship, all crew were able to escape with some sustaining minor injuries. The loss of the ship represents a significant loss to the already small island navy.

Authorities don’t know what caused the incident, but there are fears that the capsized vessel will be the centre of a new environmental disaster caused by an oil spill.
