NATO has launched a new initiative that would transmit information into space in the case of an attack against undersea cable infrastructure.

Since the Nord Stream pipelines were destroyed under dubious circumstances, Western Navies have become increasingly concerned about the threat of underwater sabotage. Most communications sent between North America and Europe rely on high-speed fibre optic cables.

While these cables carry sensitive information, they rarely are under armed guard, which makes them susceptible to surveillance or attack.
