Kongsberg Defence Australia will be exporting Coastal Defence System (CDS) Command and Control (C2) consoles for the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) to Poland.

The order represents the Australian arm of the defence giant’s first export deal for the system; the contract will mean a jobs boost for its South Australia manufacturing facility in Mawson Lakes, as per a recent press statement.

The NSM CDS C2 system is an evolution of the NASAMS air defence console which is already being deployed by the Australian Army and shares some of that system's hardware.

Work on manufacturing the C2 consoles was set to begin immediately, with a delivery date pencilled in during 2026.

Managing Director of Kongsberg Defence Australia John Fry described the deal as a “huge milestone” and commented: "Together with our Australian suppliers, we have demonstrated our determination and competitiveness to be able deliver to an international NSM CDS customer.

“This will also be our first export under the Commonwealth’s Global Supply Chain Program, so creating opportunities in the international market for our local suppliers is a fantastic outcome.”

The deal forms part of a wider CDS contract previously signed between Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Poland. In September 2023 the Polish Ministry of Defence struck a deal worth an estimated €1.8 billion to buy two new Maritime Missile Unit squadrons for the Polish Navy.

The contract included “several hundred” NSM missiles, plus command vehicles, launchers, and other pieces of related equipment, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2032.
