Japan has purchased two Sea Guardian drones from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems. According to a press release from General Atomics, the drones will boost the Japanese Coast Guard’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.

In recent years, Japan has been moving away from its pacifist post-Pacific war roots of low military spending. By 2027, Japan is expected to spend two percent of its GDP on defence with Japan’s Self Defence Forces buying F-35 jets from the United States, procuring more ammunition for its stockpiles, and joining the United Kingdom and Italy in building the next generation Tempest fighter jet [Japan Times]
