General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) has won an $808.6 million deal to supply electronic systems for Mk54 torpedoes to the U.S. Navy.

As per a recent company press statement, work on the contract will start immediately at the GDMS facility in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and all deliveries are due to be completed by the end of 2032.

The Mk54 torpedo was developed by Raytheon in partnership with the U.S. Navy as a more cost-effective version of the Mk50 that would perform well in shallow waters. It can be fired from torpedo tubes or vertical-launch tubes fitted to surface ships and can also be dropped from anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft.

In service since 2004, as well as the U.S. Navy, it’s used by forces in Canada, the U.K., the Netherlands, Germany, Brazil, Mexico, India, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.

Laura Hooks, vice president and general manager of Maritime and Strategic Systems at GDMS commented: “Our Progeny Systems employees have been providing advanced torpedo electronics to the U.S. and allied Navies for 18 years.

“This contract ensures that our surface ships and aircraft will have the most modern and capable torpedoes in the world for many years to come.”

GDMS acquired the Virginia-based Progeny Systems, which produces equipment for both submarines and surface ships, back in 2022.
