The first of four planned FALAJ 3 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) destined for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Navy has been launched by Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB).

ADSB, part of the UAE military and technology conglomerate EDGE Group, launched the vessel at a special ceremony at the ADSB shipyard in Abu Dhabi yesterday (Tuesday).

The 60m vessels are an evolution of the design of the Fearless-class OPVs built by Singapore Technologies Marine for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) in the 1990s. The ships have a 2,000-nautical-mile range (at 16 knots), a maximum speed of 26 knots and are equipped for air, surface, and submarine warfare.

ADSB signed a contract worth in the region of $950 million for the four ships with the UAE Ministry of Defence in 2021.

At the launch ceremony ADSB CEO David Massey commented: “The launch of the first FALAJ3 vessel reinforces ADSB’s expertise in shipbuilding and represents a major step forward in delivering cutting-edge, highly sophisticated vessels equipped with the latest mission systems and advanced armament.

"This addition to ADSB’s capabilities and extensive product portfolio underscores our commitment to supporting the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Defence. As we deepen this partnership, we remain focused on driving innovation and excellence to meet the evolving needs of the nation’s defence landscape.”
