Damen Inks Deal With Colombia For A New Frigate

Damen Shipyards Group has inked a deal with the Colombian state-owned shipbuilder COTECMAR to provide “technical support and the supply of components for the construction of Damen’s SIGMA 10514.” [Damen] The ship will be built in Colombia in its shipyards according to a press release from Damen. 

Damen has previously sent the multi-mission frigate to Indonesia and Mexico. Using Indonesia’s frigate as an example, Colombia will likely outfit the frigate with weapons from MBDA and Leonardo [USNI]. 

The purchase comes at a time of increasing defence spending in Colombia as it contends with insurgents and lingering tensions with Venezuela.
