The Pakistan Navy’s second Hangor-class submarine, PNSM Shushuk, has been launched at a ceremony in a Chinese shipyard.
The boat was launched on Saturday at Wuchang Shipbuilding in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province, in a ceremony overseen by its Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ovais Ahmed Bilgrami.
As per a navy statement released on social media, VAdm. Bilgrani “emphasized that Hangor Class submarines, equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, will play a pivotal role in maintaining the balance of power and maritime order in the region.”
The new boat is the second of eight Hangor-class submarines being acquired by the Pakistan Navy under a deal first struck between its government and Chinese President Xi Jinping during his state visit to the country in 2015.
China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC) is building four of the vessels in China; the other four are being constructed in Pakistan via a Technology Transfer (TT) agreement at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW).
The keel was laid on the first of the domestically produced subs, the future PNSM Tasnim, in Karachi in December 2022.
