Atlas Elektronik Wins Sonar Contract For Royal Danish Navy
)
Royal Danish Navy frigates will use towed array sonar (TAS) systems made by a German firm after the Danish Ministry of Defence's Materiel and Procurement Agency (FMI) awarded the contract to Atlas Elektronik.
The announcement was made via the European procurement portal and in a Danish Armed Forces (Forsvaret) press statement on its website on Friday.
As per the Forsvaret statement, acquiring the TAS “will strengthen the Navy's ability to use the frigates for anti-submarine operations” and “enhance the Navy's ability to conduct anti-submarine operations at long distances and depths.”
Contract negotiations will start in about a week’s time after a ten-day "standstill period" has run its course.
Senior engineer and head of the weapons and electronics department in FMI's maritime division, Bjørn Stege said Atlas Elektronik has “proven to be the supplier that meets all the requirements.”
He added: “In working on this acquisition, we have conducted thorough market research to map out the possibilities for acquiring a capacity that can meet all the operational needs of the Navy.”
Chief of the Navy Rear Admiral Søren Kjeldsen added: "The choice of towed sonar has reached an important milestone in building a Danish anti-submarine capability in the ABSALON class.
“The towed sonar is the primary sensor that will enable Danish frigates to participate in anti-submarine operations, including in the North Atlantic."
