Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and air-maritime integration were the twin focuses of Exercise Cutlass Fury, a Canadian-led initiative also involving the United States, the United Kingdom, and Denmark.

Cutlass Fury 2025 (CF25) was a ten-day exercise which took place off the coast of Nova Scotia and came to an end on Wednesday. Its primary aim was to refine warfighting skills and improve interoperability among the participating forces.

Cutlass Fury is a bi-annual, Canadian-led, multinational ASW exercise where sailors, aviators, and soldiers from across Canada work alongside international allies and partners from around the world.

The Royal Canadian Navy posted last week on social media: “After days of excitement and action at sea, our signature Atlantic maritime exercise has come to a successful end.

“The invaluable experiences gained by our sailors will go far in maintaining and improving defence coordination with our Allies. We would like to thank all participant navies who visited us in Halifax for the exercise.”

At the start of CF25 Commodore Jacob French, Commander of Canadian Fleet Atlantic, commented: “This exercise is vital for enhancing our tactical capabilities and fortifying our partnerships.

“The dedication and professionalism of our forces will be prominently showcased as we engage in realistic training environments designed to improve our overall effectiveness.

“Cutlass Fury 2025 provides an invaluable opportunity for continuous improvement, allowing us to refine our strategies and tactics while strengthening bonds with our Allies and defence partners.”

And Commander of Maritime Forces Atlantic and Joint Task Force Atlantic Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz added: “Exercise Cutlass Fury 2025 showcases the RCN’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence and international collaboration, and we are thrilled to be working alongside our allies to bolster our collective security.

“This Canadian-led exercise will not only highlight our advanced capabilities but also reinforce the importance of unity and cooperation in addressing complex global security challenges… we will demonstrate operational excellence, a culture of continuous improvement, and refine tactics and procedures for future operations.”
