Maritime systems specialist Alewijnse has been selected by Damen Naval to manage integration and electrical systems installation on Colombia’s new PES frigate.
Damen Naval is leading the design, engineering and construction of the Colombian-built Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie frigate alongside COTECMAR, Colombia’s national shipbuilding company.
Alewijnse has a long track record of partnering with Damen on naval projects; most recently they collaborated on the Dutch Navy’s new Combat Support Ship, Den Helder.
Jasper Oreel, Damen Naval Project Director, commented: “As one of our co-makers and main suppliers, Alewijnse will play a crucial role in determining the success of the PES project.”
He added: “I am pleased to see Alewijnse also teaming up to support the local content efforts with the aim to involve the Colombian market.”
CEO of Alewijnse Gert Bravenboer added: “This is a great example of a strategic alliance where the yard, suppliers, and technology partners collaborate closely.”
Under the deal Alewijnse will integrate all major electrical systems, including power distribution, cable routing, power management, and onboard systems such as navigation lighting and entertainment, as well as other subsystems in collaboration with other industry partners.
Dutch shipbuilding group Damn Naval agreed a deal with the Colombian Ministry of Defence to build the PES frigate for the Colombian Navy at the COTECMAR shipyard in Cartagena back in 2022. The ship is due to be delivered in 2030.
The PES vessel, the first to be built in Colombia, will be based on the design of Damen Naval’s SIGMA Multi-Mission Frigate 10514; variants of this ship are already in use in Indonesia and Mexico.
The 105-metre vessels have a maximum speed for more than 27 knots, a 5,000-nautical-mile range, and are equipped for both surface and anti-submarine warfare missions.
