Navy Leaders Champion Shortlisted For RN Community Award
Powerlifting Royal Navy submariner and Navy Leaders champion Wesley McGuinness has been nominated for the inaugural Royal Navy Leadership Awards.
The Plymouth-based submariner, our inaugural Navy Leaders Champion, has been shortlisted for the Royal Navy Community Impact Leadership Award in recognition of his work with the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, We Remember Submariners, ActivKids UK, and The Chestnut Appeal for Men’s Health among others.
The First Sea Lord’s Annual Leadership Symposium and Awards will be held on May 13 at the Leonardo Royal Hotel by Tower Bridge in London. The awards are run by the Leadership Institute Royal Navy (LIRN) and seek to recognise and reward the excellence in leadership across the Royal Navy fleet.
Speaking exclusively to Navy Leaders, Wesley said: “It’s an honour to be recognised among individuals who are making a positive difference, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the community through my work with charities and supporting young people in understanding the value of sport.

“I’m really pleased to receive the news that I’ve made the shortlist for the awards. It’s great to feel valued and recognised for the effort I put into supporting the community, whether that’s working with charities or helping young people understand the importance of sport. I’m absolutely delighted.”
Away from his charity work, and of course his regular RN duties, Wesley has been busy training and competing in his chosen sport.
Updating us on his recent exploits, he said: “I’m really pleased with my recent performance at the British National Championships in February, where I achieved another podium finish.
“This result has earned me an invitation to represent Team GB at the World Championships in May, an achievement I’m incredibly proud of and one that reflects the resilience, discipline, and commitment I continue to put into my sport.
“Looking ahead, preparations are already underway for a busy and exciting year. This includes The Hands Across the Sea Championships in Reno, Nevada, as well as the English Bench Press Championships in two weeks’ time, where the aim is to secure another podium finish and an invitation to represent Team England at the IPF Commonwealth Championships in Canada later this year.
“There is also the opportunity to represent Team GB in Lithuania in September.
It’s shaping up to be a demanding but rewarding 12 months, with plenty of work and planning ahead. I would like to sincerely thank Navy Leaders for their continued support: they have played a vital role in both last year’s achievements and the successes so far this year.”
