Final preparations are being made for the inaugural Hands Across The Sea powerlifting contest at HMNB Devonport in Plymouth, Devon.

Saturday’s contest, the first official competition between British Powerlifting and Powerlifting America, seeks to bring together serving members, veterans, and injured service personnel from both nations in a shared spirit of strength, resilience, and camaraderie.

It will pit a team of the strongest U.K. Armed Forces powerlifters against a selection of the strongest American military powerlifters, with the title of Strongest Force at stake.

Royal Navy submariner and Navy Leaders Champion Wesley McGuinness is U.K. team manager and captain, and one of the founders of the event.

Ahead of this weekend’s contest he commented: “This prestigious competition represents months of dedication, planning, and teamwork. Paul [Foran, Head Coach], James, and I have invested tremendous effort into creating an event worthy of the athletes, the armed forces, and the wider community, and we are proud to be bringing it to life.

“This year’s competition stands as a celebration of unity, inclusiveness, and shared strength. Powerlifting personnel from the USA military will go head-to-head with service members from across the U.K. Armed Forces in a showcase of determination, skill, and camaraderie.

“We are also honoured to welcome Invictus Games athletes and amputee lifters — remarkable individuals whose resilience embodies the true spirit of the sport. Together, these competitors will test themselves to determine which side of the Atlantic holds the edge, all in the spirit of friendly rivalry.

“We are particularly fortunate to have the Royal Navy’s Director of People and Training, Rear Admiral Jude Terry, opening the event with the morning ceremony. Her presence underscores the importance of the occasion and the pride the Royal Navy takes in supporting initiatives that promote teamwork, physical excellence, and international collaboration. We are equally honoured to welcome Honorary Captain Peter Reed, whose attendance further strengthens the significance of what this event represents.

“To our support network and the many sponsors who have reached out — thank you. Your commitment and generosity have been instrumental in helping us shape what will undoubtedly be one of the standout events of the year.

“We look forward to hosting and welcoming you all. The journey to this moment has been demanding, but every challenge has only fuelled our passion and love for the sport. We are ready to deliver an unforgettable day of strength, solidarity, and service — and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

The already-planned return event in 2026 in Nevada will provisionally also include police, fire, and first responder personnel, whether serving, veteran, or injured.
