The world has changed – and so too have the threats we face. In this new global context, we are moving towards a data-centric, digitally driven, and autonomy-enabled low carbon future force operating in a multi-domain and integrated ‘system of systems’.
At BMT, we understand that our defence customers and industry partners alike are being asked to do more than ever in response to increasing threats, to unlock the opportunities posed by new technologies, mitigate the impacts of climate change, and overcome ongoing social and economic issues such as inflation and skills shortages.
The acquisition and through life sustainment of defence assets is hugely complex, posing a plethora of technical and management challenges. External support can help to supplement the capability – that is, the competence and the capacity – to overcome these challenges.
For government departments looking to procure new capabilities or support solutions – BMT provides consulting engineering and management consultancy services to project teams in the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and the US. We help our customers to maintain safe, capable and available warships, auxiliaries and submarines – as well as supporting Land equipment portfolios, and providing technical advice and programme expertise to assist in the delivery of digital and information technology.
Our tried and tested customer friend approach is based on experience gained from working with defence customers including UK DE&S, the UK Naval Authority Group, UK Front Line Commands, the Australian Navy Engineering branch, and Canada’s Department of National Defence to name a few. By integrating design, procurement, and operation expertise, we help to increase the capability, availability, safety, and security of assets across the lifecycle. We use our decades of experience to understand where risks and issues typically occur in complex programmes and based on that evidence, we deploy tailored and targeted mitigation action across all functions of a programme.
BMT is perhaps best known for excellence in design and naval architecture – this is reflected in our contributions to the design of the QEC aircraft carriers, the Tide class tankers, Type 31 frigates, and the Fleet Solid Support programme. We are proud to be a global force in ship design, drawing on our rich maritime heritage, providing both solutions and customer friend services for the defence market.
But our expertise extends well beyond our design pedigree – from initial concept through to disposal, we support customers at every stage of the project lifecycle. Working across multiple defence domains, including Ships, Submarines, Defence Digital, Research, and Land, Joint & Air, we blend capabilities from the entire spectrum of engineering and programme management disciplines. From working on the Victoria In-Service Support Contract for the Royal Canadian Navy’s submarine fleet and developing an environmental and sustainability programme for Canada’s Department of National Defence, to the provision of engineering services to the UK MOD via EDP as part of the Aurora Partnership and continued support to the Australian Navy Engineering branch — we work with our customers to engineer the right outcomes, optimise their assets, improve performance, and increase efficiency.
Our people are skilled to support the exploitation of available technology — with a wealth of specialist knowledge, we are a recognised and valued defence research provider to government and industry customers — and we also provide sustainability services as part of defence and other government contracts, including supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Our independence and impartiality, coupled with our collaborative approach, means that we are also well placed to partner with prime contractors and Original Equipment Manufacturers across the globe, providing domain experience and a deep understanding of the design and support of both military and commercial maritime systems and equipment.
BMT has incredible people with outstanding technical knowledge who can deliver meaningful, practical solutions to our defence customers’ most important and impactful engineering challenges: both today, and into a safer, more efficient, and sustainable future.
